New Bolton boss wants fans to back team

Owen Coyle is expecting the Bolton Wanderers faithful to fully get behind the team against Arsenal on Sunday. Under former manager Gary Megson fans were often negative towards the side and frequently booed teams off the field.

Coyle is hoping for a change of atmosphere against the Gunners and wants the home support to get behind his inherited team.

"I can only speak from my time as a player here, but the backing we had from these fans back then was remarkable," explained Coyle. "It made hairs on the back of your neck stand up at times and that's what we need now.

"The fans here have an important role to play - it needs to be a collective effort if we are to move out of the bottom three and up the table.

"We need this club to have a united front. The situation with the fans did not help anybody. You need the fans supporting you.

"At the end of the day, players will make mistakes. There will be tough times as a footballer but it's important you know you are still getting that level of support.

"They need to be with us. There are games you might go behind and the crowd can rouse you. Having said that, we also need the players to give them something.

"Supporters come along expecting a minimum that the guys in their jerseys are giving their maximum to try and win a game for them."
