Nagoya Grampus striker Josh Kennedy is hoping he is deployed in a starting role when Australia take on Serbia on Thursday morning AEST.

The Socceroos big man has failed to start in either of the first two group stage matches despite being the first-choice striker in all the World Cup lead-up games but he wants that to change as the Australians chase a spot in the Round of 16 in South Africa.

"I have been training well and doing everything I can and I did all right when I came on (against Ghana) so hopefully that was a sign that Pim can use me (against Serbia)," he said.

"And hopefully in the next game (against Serbia) I can do a bit more damage.

"Definitely I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed I wasn't starting but I am doing everything I can (to get back into the team) and we will see what happens in the next game.

"I have been hoping to come on no matter what minute it was - even in the first game - but Pim makes those decisions and that's how it is."

As for the must-win clash against Serbia, Kennedy says that the Socceroos plan on leaving nothing out on the pitch as they strive to reach the next phase of the tournament.

"We will go out and give everything we have got in that game and then hope the other result goes our way," he added.
