Mutual respect between Everton and Man Utd star Rooney

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has stated that there is now a mutual respect between the Toffees and former striker Wayne Rooney.

Despite being idolized by the Everton fans, Rooney left the club under acrimonious circumstances in 2004 and as a result, the sEngland captain has been the subject of abuse whenever he has returned to Goodison Park.

However, on his recent visit to Merseyside for United's 3-0 victory on Saturday, the Everton fans welcomed Rooney very warmly and Toffees boss Martinez has revealed that there is now a mutual respect that has built up between the 29-year-old and the fans following his appearance in Duncan Ferguson's testimonial before the start of the season.

Martinez said: "From my time here, there's always been a mutual respect. He's been a phenomenal footballer, he started at Everton and that deep down is always there.

"I think the Duncan Ferguson testimonial opened a real good option to show emotions and Wayne has always been clear in his affection towards the football club.

"Every Evertonian will tell you that we are always extremely proud of him developing at our football club."
