David Moyes says he would've named Wayne RooneyManchester United captain this season.
Roo was made captain of both club and country in the summer.
And Moyes told the Sunday Mirror: "I had identified Wayne as the outstanding candidate to become United's next captain - and Louis van Gaal obviously recognised that when he took over.
"I wouldn't say I recognised Wayne's leadership qualities when I first met him as a 16-year-old boy.
"But, when I took over at United, it was clear to me that the boy had become a man. Wayne had become a player who led by example.
"When you play for United, when you are one of the players who has carried England for a generation, you are going to mature like that.
"Fans will see him as a player who conjures up moments of individual brilliance. But those who work with him also see a player who is ready to sacrifice himself for the team.
"Wayne is a team player, without any doubt, and that is the most important quality for any captain to demonstrate.
"He carries the respect of his team-mates, not just because of his incredible talent, but because he puts the team first."
