Motherwell’s Hammell not getting carried away with Champions League prospects

Motherwell defender Stevie Hammell insists that the club is not getting too far ahead of themselves regarding a potential third-place finish this season.

The Well sit nine points clear of fourth-placed St Johnstone and with second-placed Rangers’ future in doubt, a runners-up position behind likely champions Celtic is still a probability.

But Hammell, who is close to agreeing a new deal at Fir Park, said the talk of clinching a Champions League qualifier spot, or better, has to be put on hold as the side goes about recording as many points as possible.

“We know we have a long way to go. There are still a number of teams in good form and on our tails,” he said.

“If we can keep playing the way we have done lately we’ll be okay.”

He added: “I’m happy here and would love to stay. There have been talks between the club and my agent and hopefully we’ll get things sorted.”
