Money not the motivation as Liverpool strive to be patient with talented academy

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted that the club's youth academy is not motivated by the financial aspect of the game.

The German claims that the club's sole focus is on providing a suitable environment for the youngsters at both Kirkby and Melwood to develop their talents and hopefully become key members of the Reds senior squad.

"I am not interested in the money," said Klopp.

"Of course, it's cool if you use 10 players from the Academy and we make no signing in the transfer window - I would love to be part of the press conference when I say this!

"It makes it easier of course, but it's one of the things we have to do, it's kind of an agreement. These boys start training pretty early in their lives a lot at Kirkby so we have to deliver the best education on the pitch and next to the pitch - that's our job.

"They have to deliver the perfect attitude - all they can, apart from school, they have to invest in football.

"In the end, it's our responsibility that they come through a lot more than in the last few years…but meanwhile it's really difficult because nobody is patient anymore and in England you don't have real tournaments for the U23s.

"U18 is maybe a little bit of a tournament [but] the younger ones, no tournament, no challenge, no real competition. So, you cannot really judge them and then they get to 18 and it's the final judgement.

"We hope we can give them a little bit longer, we can give them a little bit more time, leave them at the club under our wing and then bring them in the right moment. That's the plan."
