Modric: Belief never wavered in Spurs fightback

Luka Modric says he never lost belief that Tottenham would fight back at Young Boys.

Sebastien Bassong headed home for 3-1 just before half-time and a much-improved second half performance was capped by a vital second away goal as Roman Pavlyuchenko's blaster seven minutes from time changed the outlook of the overall tie at 3-2 ahead of the second leg at the Lane on Wednesday.

"To be honest, we were worried at 3-0 but I knew that we have a lot of quality in the team and that we could score one or two goals," Modric told the Spurs website.

"We managed to do just that and it ended up being a good result for the second leg, even though we didn't play well.

"The first half was so bad. I can't remember us playing as badly as we did in the first half.

"We didn't defend properly, we left them so much space and because of that we conceded three goals. That was the main problem in the first half. In the second half we did much better and 3-2 in the end is a good result."

The team now turns its attentions to a tough trip to Stoke in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.

"It's another hard game for us, but that's football," he said. "You cannot choose the games you want to play.

"We played well against them last season and won and I think we can do it again this time around."
