MLS disbanding reserves competition

MLS are to disband their reserve league in an attempt to strengthen the senior league squads with less developmental player positions. "We're going to be expanding our senior rosters in 2009 and eliminating the reserve division as it exists today," MLS commissioner Don Garber said in a press conference Friday. "We are reducing the number of developing players that are on each team's roster from ten players to four players."

With several developmental contract players featuring in this weekends MLS cup final, teams coaching staff may be questioning the decision.

"Right now the focus is to be sure we have the best senior roster and be able to have the most competitive teams we can," Garber said. "We're not walking away from development but we're saying we need to reconfigure it."
