Middlesbrough coach Agnew proud to record first win

Middlesbrough head coach Steve Agnew was proud to register his first win since taking charge of the club in March.

The Boro defeated local rivals Sunderland 1-0 on Wednesday to register their first league win since December and rekindle their survival hopes.

As things stand, Boro are still six points behind the safety in the league table.

"It feels good, and everyone's delighted with the three points," said Agnew.

"We got the goal early - it was a terrific ball from Adam Clayton and a great finish from Marten de Roon.

"Of course we were a bit anxious in the second half and we had to defend for long spells. It wasn't our intent – we wanted to go on and get the second.

"But sometimes that's the way the game goes and we showed great fighting spirit to get the win."

"Not only is it North East derby, but we haven't won since December. I'm very proud of them.

"The players are pleased with our effort and determination and I think all we do is remain focused on our next game, against Manchester City. That result gives us confidence and belief going into the weekend.

"Staying in the Premier League is always going to be a challenge but we'll enjoy competing against the best and we'll take on the fight."
