Middlesbrough boss challenges Shawky

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has challenged Mohamed Shawky to win a place in his midfield after seeing him help Egypt win the African Nations Cup.

Southgate said: "I've spoken with him.

"He wouldn't have been fit for last weekend anyway. He picked up an injury just before the African Nations Cup semi-final and missed it and played the last 10 minutes of the final.

"But I'm sure he's very proud of what he has helped to achieve. We watched a fair number of Egypt's games, we couldn't follow them all but it's a fantastic achievement for them to win it back to back and to go to Ghana and win it.

"They were a good side and the challenge is there for him to win place in the side here. The team have done very well while he has been away.

"It's like with Afonso Alves coming in, players who are in possession of the shirt are playing well and they deserve the right to keep hold of them."
