Memphis Depay's former teammate Steven Bergwijn has backed the Manchester United winger to come good next season.
Depay joined United from PSV Eindhoven last summer with the reputation as one of the most promising attackers in Europe but the 22-year-old was clearly unable to produce his best at Old Trafford.
As a result of his poor performances, there has been speculation that United could consider cashing in on Depay this summer but his former PSV teammate Bergwijn firmly believes that the Dutch international will show his true wares during the upcoming campaign.
18-year-old Bergwijn told ELF Voetbal: "I find it sad that so many people talk negatively about him.
"I have nothing but respect for Memphis. If you know where he comes from, what he has had to do to reach the top, I have a lot of respect for that.
"From PSV to Manchester United is a big step, and you can't put a player who has cost a lot of money in the garbage. I think he deserves a second chance, so he can show how the real Memphis is."
