Melbourne Victory's Muscat backs new marquee player rule

Melbourne Victory skipper Kevin Muscat has backed the new rule introduced by Football Federation Australia allowing clubs to sign an Australian-born marquee player.

The rule allows clubs to hold two marquee positions with the 'homegrown' marquee man to sit alongside the regular marquee player as both being paid outside the salary cap.

Muscat believes that the concept will definitely be advantageous to the A-League as it will help lure quality Australian players back home.

"It's positive. It means most clubs can have a look and not necessarily have to go overseas to pay somebody out of the salary cap," he said. "We've (Melbourne Victory) gone about it a bit differently, Archie (Thompson) has been a tremendous servant to the club and we've gone about it that way but I think now the clubs have an option to seriously consider having one of each.

"The financial situations of the clubs at the moment discourage that but we are certainly comfortable with the fact that now you can sign an Australian-based player and an overseas-based player as a marquee.

"I'm still in regular contact with the boys (overseas) and there does come a point in your career when you say 'look, I've had enough of this, I want to get back to my family and my roots' and I'm pretty sure with the majority of players, in the ilk of the Bresciano's and the Grella's and these guys, I'm more than sure that the financial side of things won't determine whether they want to come back because when you've been away for as long a period as they have it's all about setting up your family once again."
