Liverpool legend Steve McManaman feels fans would love to win the Carling Cup - even at the expense of qualifying for the Champions League.

After beating Manchester City 1-0 in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg earlier this week, thanks to a penalty by Steven Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish's men are on course to reach Wembley for the first time in 16 years.

"Everyone goes on about getting into the Champions League," McManaman told the Sunday Mirror. "But if you're a Liverpool fan, like me, you want to see the team win a trophy.

"Now we've got two chances."
