McInnes intent on bringing overall improvement to Aberdeen

New Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is determined to bring the fear factor back to the club now he is manager.

The former St Johnstone boss will replace Craig Brown in the Dons hotseat in two weeks after being appointed by the Pittodrie club and he is keen to restore the anxiety of former years that he did not feel when his Saints headed to the Granite City in recent seasons.

"When we came up to Pittodrie with St Johnstone we always felt we could win. Aberdeen is a big pull for opposition players coming here to a good stadium and playing in front of a big support. We always felt at Saints that if we could get on top we could win," McInnes said.

"Aberdeen is respected as a club because of tradition and the support, and we need to make sure when teams come up here they do so with a bit of fear.

"We want teams to realise they are up against a side with a bit of an edge to them."

He also revealed his intent to improve Aberdeen both on and off the pitch with a return to European football a target.

"I think any manager has to win over the fans. I wasn't the favourite for the St Johnstone job when I took over and I am sure the fans wanted someone else," he added.

"They recognised the job I had done by the time I left.

"The fans here want a team that is fully committed and winning games. We will try to deliver them one.

"It's easy to say the players here are under-achieving, but that is wrong. Aberdeen can improve on and off the pitch and it's important we all have a good work ethic. We need to work harder than any club.

"The demand of the support is part the reason why I am here - I want the same as them.

"They crave a team at the top end of the league which is constantly competing for silverware and getting into Europe.

"I want to reach every one of those targets. I want to manage a team in cup finals and a team that is successful."
