Martinez hopes Rafael Nadal inspires Wigan players

Roberto Martinez hopes his Wigan Athletic players drew inspiration from tennis ace Rafael Nadal.

Latics boss took his squad to see Sunday's thriller at the O2 when his fellow Spaniard lost the ATP World Tour final to Roger Federer.

But Martinez reckons some of Nadal's never-say-die attitude will come in handy in tonight's Carling Cup quarter-final at Arsenal. He said: "We stayed in London after the West Ham match, so the whole squad went to the tennis.

"If I could put Nadal in my team, it would be for his mental strength - that winning mentality is something we need to develop as a team.

"My squad were bubbling when they left the arena because they knew they had been watching two of the world's elite sportsmen.

"Now we can't get out on the pitch quick enough."
