Manchester United will not make a formal approach to Jose Mourinho unless it is certain they'll miss the top four, it is claimed.

The Guardian says United have indicated to Jose Mourinho's advisers that they will only formally approach him if they miss out on the top four.

The former Chelsea boss is the favourite to replace Louis van Gaal this summer and there has been contact between his representatives and the Red Devils.

But United will not make a final decision on Van Gaal's future until the end of the season.

They currently lie fifth in the table, four points behind neighbours Manchester City although they also have a game in hand on Manuel Pellegrini's side.
