Man Utd star Rooney branded daft for smoking

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been rapped for being photographed smoking on a night out.

The Daily Mail says the images were taken of Rooney after less than a week back in training for Manchester United, and four days away from his first pre-season game.

Ex-Liverpool, Sunderland and Wigan Warriors physio Mark Leather told the Daily Mail: "It is baffling to see Wayne Rooney smoking because the long-term effects are well documented and are not conducive to professional athletes. If you smoke regularly, your airwaves become blocked, it is tougher for oxygen to get round your body to your muscles and you can have respiratory problems.

"It was much more common in the past - Johann Cruyff smoked 20 or 30 a day - and in the short term it is not such a problem, but it is daft in the long term as it could curtail your career."
