Rene Meulensteen has been offered a return to Manchester United.

It's emerged United chiefs have reached out to Meulensteen about returning to Old Trafford in a coaching capacity.

The Dutchman left United last summer following David Moyes' arrival and has been out of work since a short stint in charge of Fulham.

Meulensteen first joined United in 2001 to work with the youth team before leaving five years later to become manager of Danish side Brondby.

He returned to Manchester to become Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant for six seasons before departing in the summer of 2013 following the appointment of Moyes.
