Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says fans should be excited about the current crop of young players now breaking through.

Scholes believes United's latest generation are set to become the club's next stars. But while his retirement has created room for players like Tom Cleverley, he says his decision to walk away had nothing to do with the club's rapidly emerging talents.

"I didn't know so many would come through so soon," the 36-year-old told the Manchester Evening News.

"Obviously I knew there were a lot of good young players coming through, but for me it was all about how I felt.

"I knew I wouldn't be playing the big games anymore, my legs weren't what they used to be and I didn't want to go on like that.

"But I've been really impressed with Tom Cleverley and the other young players like Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck. They've been brilliant and I'm sure they will go on to be great players for United.

"It's just a shame Tom got his injury when he did. He was in fantastic form from the moment he came on in the second half of the Community Shield."
