Man Utd legend Charlton: I can't consider Rooney leaving

Manchester United legend and director Sir Bobby Charlton is pleased they fought off the attention of Chelsea to keep Wayne Rooney. After United twice rejected offers from Stamford Bridge, he has started the new season with a bang.

"I don't think there was that much that went on," Charlton told the Manchester Evening News. "I was never pulled into a situation where I had to decide what do we do about Wayne Rooney.

"I don't know whether someone said the wrong thing or caught him on a bad day.

"It will not the first time a footballer comes into the manager with all sorts of problems.

"But it was a bit of a blip and, hopefully, that's behind us now. I look at it and he's with us, he's happy and David Moyes has to be thanked for that, Sir Alex Ferguson also.

"Because I don't like the idea of Wayne Rooney not playing for us.

"Whenever I go into the dressing room everything seems quite rosy at the moment.

"Hopefully, we will keep seeing that big smile on his face every time he scores."
