Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has stated his belief that Lionel Messi spoke in the heat of the moment by announcing his retirement soon after the Copa America Final.

Argentina suffered a heart wrenching penalties loss at the hands of Chile in the final of the Copa America Centenario on Sunday and following the defeat, La Albiceleste star Messi shocked the world by announcing his intention to retire from the national team.

However, Romero believes that Barcelona's Messi made the comment in the heat of the moment and hinted that Argentina's record goalscorer will reconsider his decision.

"I think that Leo spoke in the heat of the moment, because a good opportunity passed us by," said Romero.
