Manchester United hero Paul McGrath has called on manager David Moyes to go for Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata in January. McGrath wrote in the Sunday World: "On New Year's Day, when the Premier League transfer window opens, Manchester United should stick in a big, big bid for Juan Mata.

"He's just the player they need to kick on in the title race and it breaks my heart to say that my boyhood club Chelsea don't seem to want the brilliant Spaniard.

"I'm sure the club would be reluctant to sell a player to a big domestic rival, but Mata will want away come January.

"He needs to be playing regularly in the run-up to the World Cup, otherwise his place in Spain's star-studded squad is surely in jeopardy."
