Wayne Rooney praised England manager Roy Hodgson for allowing him to play with freedom.
The Manchester United and Three Lions captain scored his 50th international goal in Tuesday night's 2-0 Euro2016 qualifying win over Switzerland at Wembley and upon breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's England record, spoke highly of Hodgson for giving him the exemption to play with no limitations.
"You play each game and each year as it comes, really, and I went through a spell around 2008 where I didn't score for a couple of years, I think, for England, and I think since Roy's come in, I've scored a lot, a lot of goals under Roy and I'm grateful for him to let me play with the freedom which I enjoy," he told ITV Sport.
The win saw England remain at the top of Group E with a perfect record of eight wins from eight matches and a goal difference of plus 23 having already qualified for next summer's UEFA tournament in France by beating San Marino 6-0 on Saturday.
