Wayne Rooney ignored the crowd to set up Antonio Valencia's opening goal, then new signing Javier Hernandez scored after coming on as a half-time substitute.
Chelsea, who found Edwin van der Sar is impressive form, gave themselves hope late-on by halving the deficit through Salomon Kalou.
But another interval substitute, Dimitar Berbatov, coolly lobbed keeper Henrique Hilario to seal the match on the stroke of full time.
