Manchester United boss David Moyes had no problem with Wayne Rooney playing in both of England's friendlies last week.
Rooney played the full 90 minutes against Chile and it was with reluctance he accepted being substituted after 71 minutes against Germany.
Moyes said: "I expected Wayne to play both games - though maybe not for quite as long as he did.
"But I know Wayne wants to play the games.
"I will have to look after him and give him a breather in the next couple of months.
"He works his socks off - his effort is incredible. He's like a street footballer of a different generation who just wanted to go out to play.
"They didn't know about rotation or being rested."
