Man Utd boss Ferguson: Owen close to first team regular

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says Michael Owen is pushing for a regular start after his hat-trick against Wolfsburg last night.

United beat Wolfsburg 3-1 to reach the Champions League last 16 as Group B winners.

And Owen left little doubt that, on this form, he should be in Capello's England squad for South Africa.

United boss Fergie said: "As Michael has proved many times, he is one of the best strikers around."

Owen has started just eight games for United this season. But Fergie believes performances like last night's will see him push for a regular place.

He added: "Absolutely. At the end of the day, the evidence is always on the football field and Michael has given plenty tonight.

"His training performances have improved steadily and I am delighted with his performance tonight."
