Manchester United are following Espanyol midfielder Javi Marquez.
The midfield schemer was watched by United chief scout Martin Ferguson on the weekend.
Marquez is similar in style to Paul Scholes and his exciting form has also attracted admiring glances from local rivals Barcelona, where coach Pep Guardiola rates him highly.
Now 24, Marquez has proved his fitness this term to the likes of United and Barca after breaking his leg last season.
Barca are expected to move for the midfielder should they be priced out of a deal for Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.
