Man Utd ace Rooney: Last season personal write-off for me

Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney rates last season as a nothing year for him.

Last term he grew frustrated, and the frustration turned to anger when critics began to dismiss him as a spent force. After a hat-trick at West Ham, he responded by swearing at a television camera and quite rightly incurred the wrath of the FA.

"I wouldn't say it was a lost year because we won the league," he said. "But it was frustrating because I knew I could do better. I was working hard but things weren't coming off. It was hard.

"It would have been quite easy to lose confidence in my ability. It could have been difficult to come back to my best. It's hard when you know you can do things but when you try it's not working. It is hard to come to terms with that.

"Thankfully I managed to get over it and now I'm playing some of the best football I have played in a long time."
