Wigan Athletic signing Antolin Alcaraz is being tipped for Premiership success by Paraguay teammate Roque Santa Cruz.

The Manchester City striker's advice was a factor in 27-year-old defender Alcaraz agreeing a switch to Wigan from Belgium's Club Brugge.

"I think he is going to be a great player for Wigan," said Santa Cruz.

"He is a great talent. He can play with the ball very well even though he is a centre back. What makes him a great player to watch is that he reads the game very well.

"The toughness of the league is something that he will need to learn a bit, but it's something you learn very fast as a centre back."
