Pep Guardiola said Manchester City will do everything to keep Brahim Diaz at the club.
Diaz, who is out of contract at the end of this season, scored twice in City's 2-0 win over Fulham in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night.
But the Sky Blues boss would not guarantee that the 19-year-old would take up a significant role in his team.
"He knows the desire we want for all young players," said the City manager. "They know how we want to protect them. He understands the way we want to play. We want him.
"But it doesn't depend on us. It is the desire of them. We insist we want him, but it's the agent, him, family, they decide.
"My opinion is not changed because of two goals or because he was not selected in any Premier League games.
"The opinion is so high. But in the top teams like here, to compete with Leroy (Sane), Raz (Sterling), Bernardo (Silva), Sergio (Aguero), Gabriel (Jesus), it is not easy to find space.
"He knew that in the beginning, he decided to stay and we are delighted with him. We will do absolutely everything to keep him with us, but after that he decides. It's simple."
