Man City chief Marwood wants to match Barcelona academy success

Manchester City chief Brian Marwood has ambitions of matching Barcelona's academy success.

City have announced £100million plans for a new academy and club headquarters.

Barcelona's academy next to the Nou Camp was one of many City studied before drawing up their plans for the new facility that will cater for up to 400 young players to train alongside the first-team stars, as well as housing 17 pitches and a new 7,000-seat arena for youth-team games.

"Barcelona are a great role model," said Marwood. "In the last Champions League final they had eight players who were home grown, which is an incredible statistic.

"Everyone has seen we have accelerated the recruitment process in terms of where the first team is now, but that can't be sustained so we have to develop within.

"But I wouldn't like to be sitting here in 10 years and say 'well, the facilities are great, but we didn't bring anybody through'."
