Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has enthused about the quality of his midfielder Rodri.

The Spaniard is in the form of his life over the past 12 months, having led the team to the treble last season.

Rodri was once again instrumental in a come from behind win against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League group stages on Tuesday.

"He is the best [in Europe]," Guardiola told reporters.

"Hopefully he can be better, have a good mentality and good things to improve. But he's an extraordinary holding midfielder, we were lucky the club sign these types of players.

"When we arrive was another type of player. He makes an extraordinary amount of games and now is one of the captains of the team. A fantastic defensive midfielder. Not just the goal - defensively, offensively, the composure to read the spaces, knows where the man is free. Close to the box is so dangerous. He loves to arrive in the final third and makes dribble and shoots. Playing really really well."

"Especially when the holding midfielders follow our players in the pockets and they open and defend with four or five, the space is there and Rodri use it really well," he explained.

"He can read these spaces. He likes to drive in these positions and after has the vision, I remember against West Ham, we commit and and Erling has the shot. He uses it.

"In front of goal vs Aston Villa when we won the Premier League he scored from 18-yard box and when we won the Champions League he arrives in that position and he loves it. We can use it perfectly."
