Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was baffled by the swipe from Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of Sunday's trip to Liverpool.
Going into the game, the Liverpool defender claimed winning trophies means more to their fans than City's.
Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias have since responded and Guardiola said: "They defend the club not by responding to this guy but what they have done for many years on the pitch every three days.
"That is the best way. I could answer but why? It is what it is.
"I'm incredibly proud of what we have done and I don't need that to feel that my players are really trying to do it."
