London mayor Sadiq Khan brands West Ham fans ''mindless hooligans'

London mayor Sadiq Khan has branded West Ham fans "mindless hooligans" after last week's defeat to Burnley.

Khan is due to meet West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady early next week to discuss security arrangements at the Taxpayers Stadium.

Relations between the Hammers board, stadium owners E20 and the London Legacy Development Corporation have been strained over matchday security.

Earlier this week, the Mayor told West Ham to “get a grip" and take responsibility for the behaviour of their fans at their £2.5 million-a-year rented home.

And at his weekly Question Time in front of the London Assembly at City Hall, the Mayor revealed several fans involved in the violence had already served banning orders.

Khan said: “I understand that many West Ham fans have concerns about the club and the way it's run, but the scenes at the London Stadium were a disgrace and mindless hooliganism.

“The Safety Advisory Group recognised the stewarding was stretched significantly thanks to the volume of incidents that showed a planned and co-ordinated campaign.

“More than a dozen fights broke out in the stands between fans, 26 individuals tried to get on the pitch and 22 were stopped while four made it on.

“There were 150 separate incidents, 40 assaults and 50 public order offences.

“A former Upton Park steward was knocked to the ground and trampled by mindless thugs. Six of the 56 persons of interest have served banning orders previously.

“I have called on those that run West Ham to build on, and focus on building, better relations. The overwhelming majority of West Ham fans, and the taxpayer, deserve much better."
