Liverpool, Wolves go for Newcastle contract rebel Taylor

Liverpool are chasing Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor. The Evening Chronicle says Taylor has emerged as a shock target for Liverpool in the January sales to offset a three-month injury lay-off for Jamie Carragher - and Wolves are also carefully monitoring the situation.

The Newcastle United contract rebel has yet to agree new terms with the Magpies, even though it is understood he has been made a lucrative offer to extend his career at St James' Park.

Both the United hierarchy and boss Chris Hughton have made it abundantly clear they want the former Under-21 captain to stay on Tyneside.

A Merseyside source said: "Taylor is certainly one of the players who has come into the equation now that Carra is out for three months.

"It's a massive blow for Roy Hodgson to lose a player like him. But he knows he has just got to get on with it, and that means asking the new board to release funds to sign some cover.

"Taylor isn't the only defender that has been mentioned but, if he is available, then he will come under serious consideration."
