Liverpool winger Downing fears for England career

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has confessed he feels his England career could be over.

However, the midfielder retains hope of playing his way back into the England frame this season.

"I'm not getting my hopes up too much as I haven't played for England for over a year," Downing told the Daily Mail. "If I play well and the manager decides not to pick me, then there's nothing more I can do.

"The only for me is I need to play well and if he changes his mind then perfect I'd love to go to the World Cup. But if not I'll just carry on doing my best for Liverpool. I haven't spoken to him, not even at the Euros. It was strange after (coming home as) I didn't know why I was there to be honest.

"I didn't feel part of it. He never told me to warm up. In the friendly against Norway I played well and thought I had a chance of playing but it just didn't come about. As the games went on we were struggling and I thought I could offer something different but obviously he didn't see it that way.

"I don't know if that will change as he looks as younger players and a different way of playing. If it changes brilliant, if not then I'll carry on playing."
