Liverpool legend Rush out of Wales running

Liverpool legend Ian Rush is out of the running for the Wales job.

The Sun says former Sweden boss Lars Lagerback is now the frontrunner as the FAW look to make an appointment in time for the Euro 2012 qualifier against England in March.

The Welsh committee have decided they want a manager with relevant experience to take the team forward.

And although a popular choice with fans, Rush has only an eight-month spell in charge of Chester on his managerial CV.

Rush, 49, scored a record 28 goals for Wales in 73 appearances.

He currently works on Liverpool's academy staff, having also acted as attacking coach under Gerard Houllier at Anfield in 2003.

Lagerback, 62, confirmed his interest in the job last week and spoke to FAW officials over the weekend.

A source close to the FAW said: "Rush is not what they are looking for in terms of experience.

"He would do a brilliant job raising the profile of the game in Wales.

"But the focus with a good young group of players has to be getting to a major tournament."
