Liverpool hero Mark Lawrenson claims that Steven Gerrard was desperate to get the Rangers job.
Lawrenson has heard many talking about whether Gerrard was keen on the job. But he believes the player has a desire to prove himself at the very top of management.
Gerrard has taken over at the Scottish giants after leaving the Reds youth coaching staff, and he hopes to challenge Celtic for the Scottish league in the coming years.
Lawrenson told Paddy Power: "I wasn't surprised by Steven Gerrard's appointment at Rangers, because I'd heard that he really wanted to go.
"The way football is now, for anyone to go anywhere, they've got to have certain guarantees about life and football at the club, so there is no way that Rangers have not said to him 'you've got a certain amount of money to spend on wages and transfers'.
"It's a tough job because of where Celtic are in relation to everybody else."
