Phil Thompson believes Dick Advocaat is a great candidate for the now-vacant Sunderland role.
The Wearside club sacked Gus Poyet on Monday after falling to within just one point of the relegation zone which has prompted plenty of speculation regarding a possible replacement.
Former PSV Eindhoven, Rangers and Zenit Saint Petersburg boss Advocaat has already been heavily touted as a potential successor to Poyet and former Liverpool star Thompson feels he would be the right man for the job.
"Someone like Dick Advocaat fits the bill. I think it's a challenge that would appeal to him, even if it's just for the nine games," he told Sky Sports.
"He's available and very, very experienced, so maybe that's the sensible short-term option."
