Liverpool great Barnes: Strength of Premier League comes from foreigners

Liverpool legend John Barnes believes that a large contingent of foreign players in the Premier League is doing the England national team more harm than good.

The English Premier League is certainly the most competitive division in Europe and the English top flight boasts a host of world class players from all corners of the globe.

However, the current England national team looks average at best and now ex-Liverpool star Barnes has gone on to state that the high amount of foreigners is not doing the Three Lions any favours.

Barnes told the Daily Mirror: "We have to look at the next World Cup in two years, and not put pressure on these guys if they don't win a couple of games.

"If these guys develop, we have a good chance of improving.

"But it's an indictment again on the fact that we have maybe 30 per cent of players in the Premier League to choose from.

"The strength of the Premier League comes from the foreign players, so for people to say that England should be strong because the Premier League is strong, that's crazy."
