Liverpool publicly ended their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk on Wednesday.
The club issued a formal apology to Southampton after they were caught illegally 'tapping up' the Dutchman.
And now that the mooted 60m deal is off, Liverpool fans were not happy…
Club legend Jamie Carragher found someone to blame…
FFS! Only person at Liverpool who should apologise is the person who fed the story he wanted to come to LFC when no fee had been agreed. https://t.co/wnlhXnqKqQ

Our attempt at becoming a 'big' club in the transfer market is embarrassing. I question whether we can really move forward under FSG #LFC

Justin thinks that this failure will have wider ramifications…
This is catastrophic for the club. Will have an impact across the summer. We have gone from a serious option for top class players to a joke

But one observer chose to take the situation as a positive…
Wouldn't be overly surprised to see Van Dijk end up at Anfield this summer. Today's moves give breathing space to both clubs temporarily.
