Liverpool have confirmed that captain Steven Gerrard will be sidelined for around about two weeks.
The Reds midfielder had returned to action following groin surgery in the summer but missed the weekend's win over West Bromwich Albion due to an ankle problem.
Gerrard sustained the injury in training and picked up an infection on the area which required him to go hospital for tests and he has now been ruled out of his clubs next match and an upcoming double-header for the England national team.
"Steven Gerrard has now undergone treatment to clear out all infection from his right ankle, which has been placed in a protective plaster cast," read a statement from Liverpool.
"The player will not be available for this weekend's game against Swansea City or for the upcoming England friendlies against Spain and Sweden.
"Steven will now continue his rehabilitation programme under the guidance of the club's medical staff."
