Liverpool are close to completing the transfer of Charlton Athletic youngster Joe Gomez, with a deal set to be done early next week, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds look to have beaten off competition from the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and newly-promoted AFC Bournemouth, to secure the 18-year old's signature.

A fee for the England U19 defender is yet to be agreed with the Addicks but the transfer is expected to now go through at closer to £6million instead of initially reported £3.5million. The deal is expected to contain a number of performance-related add-ons.
