Liverpool chief Michael Edwards decided against making a move for Kalidou Koulibaly this summer, according to reports.
The Reds are desperately thin at centre-back due to injuries to Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.
They could have added Napoli stopper Koulibaly to their ranks, but Edwards refused to meet the Serie A club's demands.
According to the Daily Star, the Naples outfit wanted €60m for their star defender.
But at the age of 29, Liverpool felt Koulibaly was too old to justify the price.
It is believed Liverpool will turn to the transfer market in January given the season-ending injuries to Van Dijk and Gomez.
