Liverpool boss Rodgers backing 'B League' proposal

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is supportive of the FA's plans of a 'B League'.

The move has been criticised but Liverpool boss Rodgers claims it represents the best way to develop young players in this country.

He said: "It's something I've thought for years should happen. I've worked in development for nearly 15 years and there's a huge investment that has been put into young players in this country and into coaching.

"We're talking £300-odd million in coaching for young players to come through and yet there are only over 30 per cent of young [English] players getting an opportunity in what is the most competitive league in the world, so we have to find a way to give them the opportunity."

He added on talkSPORT: "We have to find a way to give them the opportunities because as much as we have done with the fixture scheduling of Under-21s, it doesn't bring the competitive nature required to assess a young player.

"People will talk about the tradition of the game but one of the things that's most constant is change and you have to look at ways in which you can be better.

"The B League is something that is very important to give young players that competitive football."
