Lithuania win important for England progress - Southampton defender Bertrand

Ryan Bertrand was mostly pleased with how England's international double header panned out.

The Three Lions lost 1-0 to Germany in a friendly on Wednesday before bouncing back to defeat Lithuania 2-0 in World Cup qualifying at Wembley on Sunday.

Bertrand told southamptonfc.com: "Despite the result earlier, there were a few positives we managed to draw from the previous fixture.

"It was important that we went out today, got the win and showed that progression.

"It's a difficult game when they come and they sit off and try to frustrate you, but more often than not we managed to keep a good tempo and managed to get the goals."

The 27-year-old left-back, who started both matches, added: "We've got our individual team targets we want to hit, and we're just going to concentrate on each game as it comes and keep ticking off the boxes.

"On a personal note it's good to play for your country and get the starts in. You just hope you can do well enough to leave a good enough performance in the manager's mind for the coming fixtures too."

The victory has England sitting on top of Group F with 13 points from five matches, four clear of second-placed Slovakia.
