Lazio president Lotito: With Sarri gone these players have no-one to hide behind

Lazio president Claudio Lotito admits he's disappointed with Maurizio Sarri's resignation.

Sarri stepped down after Lazio's Champions League exit against Bayern Munich.

Lotito told TG1: “Sarri's farewell was not in the air. An unexpected thing, a bolt from the blue.

"I was in the Finance Commission and they asked me 'But did you sack Sarri?' I told them no. He was a bit betrayed by some of the people's behaviour, there is something creeping within the group. What if I'm talking about the team? I'm not referring to anything. A team that beats Bayern and then loses to Udinese and it's not just Udinese... ask yourself a question and give yourself an answer.

"Now we continue until the end of the week with Martusciello, there is no deadline for now.

"Next coach? Here we are not at Rischia Tutto to name the whole thing, this team needs a coach who at the same time uses what is called 'carrot and stick' in the jargon. Today the team is its own arbiter, it has no alibi and has no way of unloading its responsibilities on anyone."
