Joe Kinnear admits he's been "touched" by the welcome he has received from Newcastle United fans since his appointment.

The manager told the Evening Chronicle: "I am really touched by the welcome I have had on Tyneside.

"The place has been in turmoil but it has been positive.

"But I know that it's all down to the results.

"That can only come from the players, and it is my job to keep the confidence as high as possible to do that."

Kinnear also remarked: "Basically I am a fighter and always have been. I grew up on a council estate with real people in the real world.

"So I do have the working-class mentality you need. My father died when I was young and my mother raised our family in Dublin.

"I appreciate working-class life."
