Keane slams Southgate over treatment of Man Utd captain Maguire

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has hit out at England coach Gareth Southgate over his treatment of Harry Maguire.

In defeat to Denmark Maguire, who has endured a tough few months on and off the pitch, was given his marching orders for two yellow cards in the opening 31 minutes on Wednesday night.

Keane says Southgate could have shown a softer side as a devastated Maguire walked past him down the tunnel.

Keane told ITV: "I think sometimes he [Gareth] knows Harry has had a tough time on and off the pitch, a pat on the back would have helped him.

"That would have settled him from Gareth."

Keane also said that returning to an under-performing United side, following two defeats out of their first three Premier League games, won't help Maguire's form either.

"The only down side is for Maguire, he's going back to a team not full of confidence," Keane added.

"I've been in situations before when I was in a situation with brilliant characters, I felt the dressing room was the best in the world. He's not going to get that, in that back four.

"I wouldn't be anywhere near those lads - I don't see them as leaders."
