Karius kept us in the game - Liverpool manager

Loris Karius was the hero for Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Southampton on Wednesday night.

The German goalkeeper, who kept his starting spot following the weekend's 0-0 FA Cup draw with Plymouth Argyle, made a handful of vital saves in the 1-0 loss to the Saints at St Mary's.

Karius denied goalscorer Nathan Redmond on a couple of occasions in the first half and his overall performance was the main reason the Reds are still in the two-legged League Cup tie.

"[He was] good. If we lose three or 4-0 then it could be much more difficult for the second game so yes, he kept us in the game, that's how it is," said Klopp.

"That's his job and I'm not too surprised that he was able to do it.

"But actually if your goalkeeper has to make saves like this then something else is wrong in the game and that was our problem tonight."
